Various components for the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta, a dedicated corner in the Lancia stand, telematic boxes for the Peugeot Connect system, GDI injectors on various models of the Volkswagen Group and widespread use of the Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting systems on many models exhibited at the show: this, in summary, is how Magneti Marelli will be present at the 80th edition of the Motor Show in Geneva.
All technological sectors in which Magneti Marelli operates will then be represented at the Geneva-based event, with a view to provide the best answers to challenges involving automobiles in the upcoming years: environmental sustainability and safety, “intelligent” automobiles and connection to communication networks, evolution of assistance networks and services based on the new skills required for infomobility devices and multi-fuel and alternative engines.
Magneti Marelli’s presence is associated, above all, with an international preview that is especially awaited: the debut of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (stand 5231). Magneti Marelli provides a significant contribution to this model in terms of components and systems: with regards to lighting, headlamps and LED rearlamps, for the Powertrain area, electronic engine control unit for the 170-HP 1.4 Multiair engine, and intake manifolds and throttle bodies for the 1.6 and the 2.0 JTDM engines. In addition, the electronic systems area features the new navigation system that incorporates a single map navigator, a dual tuner radio receiver and CD player/MP3 reader, with the possibility of interfacing with the Blue&Me system. Lastly, the components developed and supplied by Magneti Marelli Suspension Systems, made in high-resistance steel, distinctively contribute to the new “Compact” architecture of the Giulietta.
One corner of the Lancia stand (stand 5110) will be specifically dedicated to the growing cooperation with Magneti Marelli and the technological contents developed for Lancia vehicles, such as: the Reactive Suspension System, the dual-xenon adaptive headlamps (Adaptive Xenon Light), the incorporated satellite navigator (Instant Nav), the automated transmission (Selectronic) and the Blue&Me™ system, resulting from the cooperation between Fiat Group Automobiles, Magneti Marelli and Microsoft.
Another important item relating to Magneti Marelli concerns the new Peugeot Connect system (stand 6271), which offers high added-value services thanks to a telematic connection. For this system, Magneti Marelli has provided its “telematic box", that is the device which allows the use of onboard services such as emergency calls, request for service and assistance and in the future, the possibility to manage company fleets. It is the first time that Magneti Marelli’s telematic box has been applied on a production model. In particular, the Peugeot Connect system, equipped with Magneti Marelli’s telematic box, will be available in the next few months on the new models RCZ and iOn and as an option on the 207 and 308, before extending to the other models of the Peugeot range.
With regards to various vehicles of the Volkswagen Group brands on display in Geneva, a leading contribution by Magneti Marelli concerns the high-pressure GDI injectors. These injectors represent the basic components of an advanced fuel supply system for petrol-powered engines, which, thanks to direct fuel injection in the combustion chamber, the high pressure of the jet, the multiple injection per cycle and the multi-hole nozzles, maximize combustion efficiency, thus obtaining a significant improvement in performances, fuel consumptions and emissions.
Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting technology plays a leading role in this year’s edition of the Geneva Motor Show since it is fitted on many of the vehicles on display. Among these, the new Mini Countryman (stand 6371), which fits halogen headlamps, fog lights, Bi-Xenon lamps and (Xenon) gas-discharge AFS, on the new Volvo S60 (stand 6051) with headlamps and LED rearlamps, and on the Renault Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet (stand 4130) with halogen headlamps and gas-discharge AFS. The AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting System), associated with the use of high-density (Xenon) gas discharge lamps, represents an important achievement in terms of safety. Based on an analysis of driving parameters (speed, steering angle and corner speed of the automobile), the light beam is automatically distributed so as to hit the area in front of the vehicle in the best way possible, improving visibility by more than 70% compared to traditional headlamps. This technology is especially useful as it lights up the inside of the curves as well, for added safety.
