One of Magneti Marelli’s main objectives is to develop intelligent solutions and systems that can contribute to mobility evolution, according to the following criteria: environmental sustainability, safety and quality of life inside the vehicle. This means being an activator of new technologies, aimed at a more cost-effective and sustainable mobility.
Eco-friendly technologies
In recent years, Magneti Marelli’s commitment in the area of eco-friendly technologies has increased considerably. Efforts have focused on technologies in the powertrain, transmission and exhaust system areas, for the reduction of fuel consumptions and emissions, but also for dealing with the major problem of intelligent traffic management, through info-telematic and intelligent navigation tools. Today’s new frontier is represented by hybrid and electric engines, for which Magneti Marelli intends to become a key supplier of strategic systems and components.
Technological excellence
In this area, motorsport represents for Magneti Marelli fertile ground for the development of new competences and technologies that also feed and inspire new “green” solutions. A tangible example of this is the KERS, the energy recovery system developed for F1 and now source of technological spin-offs and solutions also for systems and components aimed at mass-produced hybrid and electric engines.
Eco- telematics and infomobility
Thanks to telematic and network technologies, and to the integration of electronic systems found on a vehicle with central infrastructures and service providers, the automobile becomes a part of an integrated and intelligent system that can improve quality onboard the vehicle and on the road, as well as the surrounding environment.
Magneti Marelli offers telematic, navigation and entertainment devices that allow the world of Internet, and PC, telephony, display of information and contents with added value for the motorist to merge on the vehicle: a universe of infomobility services, solutions that help motorists monitor their vehicle, identify the ideal itinerary, optimize travel times, receive information on traffic and car parks, and minimize fuel consumption and emissions (Eco and Green Navigation).
Magneti Marelli aims at the production of telematic boxes both as OE (Original Equipment) and for the AM (aftermarket): devices equipped with an integrated system for localization, safety and infomobility applications capable of allowing the vehicle and the motorist to access intelligent mobility management services – such as telematic insurance services, fleet management, tracking, infologistics, car pooling and e-call.
Examples of Magneti Marelli engine and powertrain control technologies
TETRAFUEL®
This is the Magneti Marelli system based on an engine supply technology that allows a motor vehicle to run without distinction with four different types of fuel: gasoline, alcohol/gasoline blend (gasoline and 22% of alcohol), pure alcohol or natural compressed gas. This process is made possible by a special microprocessor and by control algorithms on the Engine Control Unit. The vehicle is equipped with two tanks: one for the liquid fuels (alcohol, gasoline or alcohol/gasoline blend), and the other for the natural compressed gas. The TetraFuel® system automatically chooses the fuel based on driving needs, optimizing the ratio of performances, fuel economy and low emission or exhaust gases.
AMT
The Automated Manual Transmission (AMT, known as Freechoice) made by Magneti Marelli is an automation mechanism of manual transmissions that combines comfortable use with fuel reduction. It is based on an electronic control unit and a hydraulic actuation system that manages clutch use and the shifting of gears. Drivers can shift gears without using the clutch, in sequential or completely automatic mode. The electronic optimization of the gear shifting reduces fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions.
GDI
Gasoline engines can considerably reduce their impact in terms of CO2 emissions; specifically, GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) systems allow significant fuel savings. Sophisticated multi-hole injection strategies and a specific family of injectors represent Magneti Marelli’s contribution in order to best take advantage of the wide potentials offered by this solution. Magneti Marelli is leader in the production of GDI injectors.
EXHAUST SYSTEMS
Magneti Marelli develops and produces exhaust systems for automobiles and motor vehicles with advanced technologies in terms of quality and performances. The aim is two-fold: to cut down on the pollutants contained in exhaust gases and to reduce noise.
