Volkswagen presented a preview of the future mobile rapid charging station created by the Components division, which from January 1, 2019 has become an independent business unit within the Group. The column can be configured flexibly and independently from the electricity grid wherever is needed, for example in public car parks, in company offices or as a temporary recharge point at events and works according to the principle of a smartphone power bank, but for electric vehicles. Each charging station enables DC quick charging with up to 100 kW of cars and electric bicycles. Up to four vehicles can be charged simultaneously: two with DC and two with AC connections. The total battery storage capacity of up to 360 kWh is sufficient for up to 15 e-vehicles. Thanks to quick charging technology, the process only takes 17 minutes on average. If the energy content of the integrated battery in mobile station set is less than 20%, the depleted column is simply exchanged for a charged one. Furthermore if it is permanently attached to the power supply with up to 30 kW via alternating current, the battery pack perpetually recharges itself and, in case the charging process is based on renewable power supply, the mobile station allows moreover the temporary storage of energy generated in a sustainable way (solar or wind) and consequently a  CO2-neutral emission mobility. The first mobile quick charging stations will be set up in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen’s hometown, in the first half of 2019 as part of a pilot project, and will support the expansion of a charging infrastructure in the urban area. As of 2020, the year in which mass production will begin, the Volkswagen mobile charging station will also be implemented in other cities and communities.
