Volkswagen builds in China its first factory specifically designed for electric vehicles
Volkswagen Group China has begun in Anting (Shanghai) the construction of the Group's first plant designed for the production of cars and battery systems based on the MEB electric modular platform.
The first model produced at the Saic Volkswagen factory in 2020 will be an electric SUV with the Volkswagen brand.
In this new plant, as well as at the Faw-Volkswagen Foshan plant inaugurated last summer, it will start producing electric vehicles on a MEB basis immediately after the start of works in Zwickau, Germany, where production on the new electric modular platform at global level will debut.
The new Anting plant will be highly digitalized and will adopt a production network based on Industry 4.0, which increases automation rates and efficiency. The facility will be equipped with more than 1,400 robots and a range of technologies that include artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality.
Over an area of over 610,000 square meters, the New Energy Vehicles facility will include a variety of functional areas including those dedicated to molding equipment, battery assembly workshops and a test circuit.
Furthermore, the plant will use 27 types of eco-sustainable technologies with a particular focus on water conservation, energy saving and CO2 emissions reduction.
