Lotus started the development of its first SUV, it will debut in 2022
Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and now also Lotus. Who would have imagined only a decade ago that manufacturers of such caliber decided to choose sport utility vehicle?
This is the reality and now the race to the SUV involves also Lotus, whose president Jean-Marc Gales has confirmed to Autocar that the development of the first SUV in the glorious history of the British carmaker (now managed by the Malaysian DRB Hicom) is already started.
The project is yet to be determined, both in engine level and also in design, but in any case the current prototype of the Lotus SUV will turn into production reality in 2022.
The program will be carried out in collaboration with the Chinese engineering partner Goldstar Heavy Industrial.
According Gales, the SUV will have the potential to double, if not triple, Lotus annual sales volumes to approximately 4,000 units, of course, with the decisive contribution of the other models in the range.
In fact Lotus future innovations also include the launch of an open-top variant of the Evora during 2018 and the third generation of the Elise, to be launched in 2020.
