Eu Parliament approves the Electronic Toll System for European highway circulation
The European Parliament in Strasbourg approved yesterday the European Electronic Toll System directive, which aims to harmonize the toll collection systems between european member countries and solve the problems of non-payment.
Thanks to the electronic toll system, the first and only dossier of the new mobility package approved by the European Union, the estimated lower costs will be around € 370 million a year.
The directive makes the coexistence of the various available technologies (on-board unit with microwave, satellite and mobile communications technology) obligatory for States. Otherwise, it will be impossible to impose the toll for the States. The Electronic Toll System also makes possible to recover the missed payments of travelers from other member countries.
Once published in the "Gazzetta Ufficiale", member States have 30 months to apply the directive.
