e-Audi: the company's strategy has been unveiled
Audi began its product offensive in the world of electric vehicles with the world premiere presentation of the Audi e-tron. This will be followed by a whole range of cars: by 2025, the Ingolstadt company will propose 12 fully electric cars in the main world markets, thanks to which it expects to reach one third of its sales, for a total of 800 thousand vehicles.
In each Audi model of the range there will be an electrified variant (BEV or plug-in hybrid). The SUV models included in the range will include the e-tron and the e-tron Sportback, which will debut in 2019.
A series of models with body variants like Avant and Sportback will be part of the product offering, whose range will cover all the major market segments, from compact to sedans.
Audi will present the first model of the e-platform by the end of 2018: the Audi e-tron GT concept, a distinctly sports coupe developed together with Porsche, which will debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show.
Another joint project born from the collaboration between the research and development departments of Audi and Porsche is the Premium Electric Platform (PPE), which will be the basis for many Audi product ranges with electric propulsion that will go from the C to the F segment.
Both the SUVs and the traditional variants will be developed on this platform, whose strength is to have been designed specifically for electric driving, thus offering advantages in terms of weight, batteries and frame proportions.
Many brands of the Volkswagen group are collaborating on the development of an electrified modular platform (MEB) that will serve as a basis for the mass production of the e-Audi models, especially in the B segment.
Furthermore, a specific model will be developed specifically to meet the tastes of the Chinese market.
"Audi e-tron marks a fundamental chapter in the history of our brand and the starting point for our electrification strategy. A total of four technical platforms and product families are the prerequisites for being able to offer electric vehicles in every segment of the market. A close collaboration between the research and development department and the other brands of the group will make it possible to make the most of the synergies required for an articulated global range that also outlines excellent financial results.
In fact, each market segment will in future include models powered by a combination of electric and combustion engines that can be charged from a power outlet, "said Peter Mertens, member of the Audi Board for technical development.
