BMW localizes in Thailand high-voltage battery production
The Thai branch of the BMW Group has emphasized another milestone in recognizing Thailand towards a future of electro-mobility. This includes local high voltage battery production and the production of the battery modules and the battery itself.
From 2019, BMW Group Manufacturing Thailand will begin local battery production in a new factory located in the Chonburi industrial complex in collaboration with the Dräxlmaier Group, one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers and a strong systems partner with BMW Group since 1966.
The personnel in charge of the production plant is highly specialized through advanced training and qualification programs started as early as September.
With a strong grasp of battery production skills, the Chonburi staff will work on battery cells provided by suppliers in the Asian region along with other imported parts such as aluminum housing, electronics, and power distribution cables.
In the first start-up phase, once the complete batteries are assembled they will be transported to Plant Rayong where they will be used in the production of the BMW Phev models of the 5-Series, 7-Series and X5 range.
